-COVER IT UP

One of the most valuable things you can buy for your pool table is a good cover. Not only will this help keep it clean, it can actually prevent the table from being damaged. The cloth used for pool tables can be sensitive, especially when it is exposed to sunlight. By covering your table, you will retain the color and condition of the cloth while preventing it from getting faded. It’s also a good idea to keep your pool table in a room that doesn’t have large windows that let in a lot of sun.

-CLEAN IT RIGHT

Even if you diligently cover your pool table after you’re done playing, the cloth will still get a bit dirty. Chalk residue can get left behind while hair and debris can build up. This makes it a good idea to get some tools specifically suited to cleaning cloth. While some people like to use a brush, others prefer to use a low-power handheld vacuum. If you do go with the vacuum option, it’s important to be careful, because suction can cause your cloth to get stretched. Give it a little TLC once you’re done playing to keep it looking good for longer. If you leave chalk on the cloth for too long, it will get embedded within the fibers and will be much more difficult to remove.

-SET GROUND RULES

You likely didn’t buy your pool table with the expectation you’d be the only one using it. Whether you’re having friends over for a party or you’re playing a game of 8-Ball with the family, everyone using the table should understand the rules for using the table. This will help keep the table in good condition and avoid accidents that cause damage. One of the most important rules to keep in mind is that there should never be any food or drinks on the table. Spills can permanently stain the cloth and the wood can become warped due to the moisture from a drink.

-NO PETS

This is such an important rule, we’re giving it an entry on its own. Unfortunately, pets don’t understand how to take care of something like a pool table. Whether it’s holes torn in the cloth from a cat’s claws or stains from your dog’s slobber, they have a tendency to cause some potentially expensive damage. If it is a possibility, keep your pool table in a room or area of the house where pets aren’t allowed. This will help protect the table from accidental damage.

-CONSIDER THE HUMIDITY

Because most pool tables are made of wood, special consideration needs to be given to keeping it in good condition. If your pool table is in a very dry climate, it can cause the wood of the table to crack. Just like musicians have to consider how humidity affects their instruments, so too should you when it comes to your pool table. You can help keep your table in good condition with the use of a humidifier. What level you set it at will depend on the conditions of the room, so it’s a good idea to discuss recommendations with a billiards expert.

As you know, pool tables aren’t inexpensive. To avoid costly repairs, it’s important that you take steps to keep it in good shape. We hope you found this to be helpful as you look to properly maintain your pool table.
